Food security challenges
and opportunities
How we read UN SOFI 2026 (FAO · IFAD · UNICEF · WFP · WHO) and the Sustainable Development Goals — and how Big Five Group answers with Feed · Educate · Empower: product, last mile, school channels, leadership and transparent trade.
External context only. SOFI and SDG figures are multi-agency UN statistics — not Big Five audited metrics. Group programme numbers use plan / programme-reported / internal labels as on Methodology. Primary sources: SOFI 2026 report · Newsroom.
Feed. Educate. Empower.
Deploy skills, capital, platforms and relationships so Africa can feed its people, educate its leaders, and empower its enterprises — at scale and with proof. Our vision — a prosperous africa — for everyone on it — frames every food-security programme we design with partners.
The food-security challenge we design against
The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World is the multi-agency baseline for hunger, diet affordability and child nutrition. We use it as external context — then build African systems that respond.
People globally faced hunger in 2025 (~7.8% · SOFI 2026)
Global hunger still far from Zero Hunger
~14 million fewer people than in 2024; ~43 million fewer than the 2022 peak. Levels remain far above the SDG Zero Hunger trajectory. Progress is real but insufficient for SDG 2.
People in Africa faced hunger in 2025 (~20% of the population · SOFI 2026)
Africa remains the epicentre
Africa is the region with the largest number of people facing hunger (overtaking Asia in the latest SOFI reading). Prevalence eased slightly in the latest reading, yet absolute numbers remain extremely high — and ~60% of people projected undernourished by 2030 could be in Africa.
People worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet (SOFI 2026)
Healthy diets remain unaffordable
Cost per plate is a strategic variable. Fortification and institutional formats only scale if programmes and households can afford them every day.
Children under 5 stunted globally in 2024 (UNICEF/WHO/WB JME · SOFI)
Child stunting remains off-track
Global stunting among children under five fell to about 23.2% in 2024 (~150 million children) — progress, but off-track for 2030. West/Central and East/Southern Africa still show very high stunting prevalence for roughly one in three children in hard-hit areas. School-channel and complementary feeding matter.

Programme challenges that match how we operate
The World Food Programme and national partners emphasise school feeding, nutritious supply, resilient logistics and accountable procurement. Those are the same rails Big Five Group is built on.
School feeding & national programmes
WFP and partner governments treat school meals as a nutrition, education and social-protection tool. Big Five Foods lands institutional formats on the South African NSNP pathway with DBE — plan scale language for ~2.5 million children/day as delivery ramps — and designs for similar school-channel logic in Kenya and other corridors.
Nutritious, shelf-stable supply
Emergency and institutional supply chains need products that travel without cold chain, fortify micronutrients, and fit local taste. Our porridges, soya, one-pots and soups are built for African plates and programme logistics.
Last-mile delivery & resilient corridors
Food security fails when stock never reaches the plate. Direct’s solar mobile containers and SANTACO-linked ranks put fortified retail and education where footfall already is; Global opens ethical route-to-market abroad.
Transparent, ethical procurement
Agencies and ministries need audit trails. Connect runs SupplierAdvisor® so approved products, menus, quotes and orders leave a trail governments, funders and operators can inspect.
WFP is a co-publisher of SOFI with FAO, IFAD, UNICEF and WHO. We align to the public challenge set those agencies describe — we do not claim a formal WFP partnership unless stated in a dated brief.
SDGs that frame our food-security work
Zero Hunger sits at the centre. Poverty, education, decent work, inequality and partnerships are inseparable from plates that arrive every day.

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture — SOFI shows the world remains far off track.
Fortified Big Five Foods staples, NSNP institutional packs, regenerative Agri supply, and last-mile Direct containers so nutrition reaches plates.

Poverty and hunger reinforce each other. When healthy diets are unaffordable, households trade nutrition for calories.
Cost-efficient fortified formats (~50% cheaper vs wholesale/retail pathways, internal) and Access pathways that open institutional and development finance.

Hungry children cannot learn. School feeding is both a nutrition and education instrument — a core WFP and national-programme priority.
NSNP pathway with DBE, Kenya school-feeding ambition, Super-Cube® leadership formation, and Wi‑Fi + education in solar containers.

Fragile food systems fail producers and informal workers. Dignified jobs in production, packing, logistics and trade are part of the solution.
Farmer partnership (Agri), container micro-enterprise (Direct), manufacturing and corridor roles, ethical trade on SupplierAdvisor®.

SOFI shows Africa carries a disproportionate hunger burden. Rural and peri-urban communities are often last to receive affordable nutrition.
Last-mile nodes where people already move (SANTACO ranks, rural hubs), Africa-first product design, verified suppliers who can sell into programmes.

No single actor ends hunger. Governments, agencies, distributors and communities need shared rails and honest proof.
Multi-pillar Group + institutional pathways (DBE, health aspirations), global distributors, philanthropy with Impact PMO, trade on SupplierAdvisor®.

Where challenge becomes design space
SOFI does not only diagnose — it points to what must be built: affordable nutrition, school channels, last-mile rails, transparent trade and capable leaders.
Affordable fortification at scale
Design cost-competitive fortified staples so public menus and households stretch budgets — our internal analysis shows ~~50% vs typical wholesale/retail pathways.
School nutrition as a delivery system
Treat NSNP and peer programmes as repeatable institutional offtake — product, logistics and OS together — not one-off donations.
Last-mile nodes that compound
Containers that Feed (food), Educate (Wi‑Fi + Super-Cube®) and Empower (jobs) turn taxi ranks and rural hubs into multi-use food-security infrastructure.
One operating system for proof
Run procurement and offtake on SupplierAdvisor® so capital, ministries and partners share the same verification fabric.
Leadership & programme discipline
Super-Cube® and Impact PMO so tools and capital are governed ethically under pressure — SDG 2 needs people who can hold multi-stakeholder delivery.
African production for African and global demand
Regenerative Agri supply plus Global corridors — production, fortification and trade that keep value and dignity on the continent.
How each pillar addresses the challenge
One holding system — production to PMO — so fortification, last mile, capital, commerce, leadership and delivery compound as Feed. Educate. Empower.
Regenerative production is the first half of Feed — soil, smallholders and provenance so fortification and logistics have something real to move.
SOFI 2026: ~309M people in Africa faced hunger in 2025 (~20%). Food security starts in the ground — degraded soils and weak offtake keep systems fragile.
Work with rural farmers to restore land, train producers, verify regenerative practice, and supply Foods and Direct with produce markets and institutions can trust.
Fortified, affordable staples put Feed on the plate — households, schools and institutions, with proof partners can cite.
~645M people faced hunger globally in 2025; ~2.7B cannot afford a healthy diet (SOFI 2026). Child stunting remains off-track (~150M under-5s globally).
Shelf-stable fortified porridges, soya, one-pots and soups — including NSNP institutional packs — designed for cost, culture and daily menus.
Last-mile rails empower communities and producers — food and opportunity where people already move (taxi ranks, rural hubs).
Nutrition fails in the last mile: spoilage, opaque mark-ups and invisible stock. SOFI shows Africa still carries the largest undernourishment burden — logistics decide whether fortified food becomes a meal.
SANTACO-linked multi-use containers, solar micro-hubs and transparent routes so Foods reaches plates and small enterprises keep value.
Capital and institutional pathways empower programmes — policy and tenders become daily meals and verifiable projects.
Public nutrition mandates and DFI capital need delivery partners who can hold complexity. Hunger and school feeding are policy problems until they become plated outcomes.
Open government, institutional and development-finance pathways with Group delivery capacity attached — e.g. NSNP ambition under DBE.
Verified trade and SAM empower ethical commerce — transparency that blocks risk across Feed and Empower rails.
Without trust rails, food systems stay opaque: capable suppliers locked out, programmes without audit trails. SOFI’s healthy-diet gap (~2.7B) is also a market-access problem.
SupplierAdvisor® + SAM: verified suppliers, live control, provenance and ethical trade for B2B, B2G and B2C.
Educate is Super-Cube® — whole-person leadership so programmes, ministries and enterprises can hold multi-stakeholder complexity.
Food-system failures are also leadership failures: tools without ethical judgment multiply harm. SDG 2 needs people who can govern delivery under pressure.
Doctoral Super-Cube® formation for executives, public servants and youth — Ubuntu, ethics and deliberate practice.
Philanthropy with proof empowers communities — transparent capital and delivery through Impact.
Giving without theory of change wastes scarce resources while ~309M people in Africa still face hunger (SOFI 2026).
Registered NPO pathways, SupplierAdvisor® listing, and programmes designed with Impact PMO so donors and communities see the same truth.
Cross-pillar PMO empowers delivery — gates, KPIs and field assurance across Feed · Educate · Empower.
SOFI shows progress is uneven and Africa remains the epicentre of undernourishment. Partners need programme discipline, not slide-deck claims.
Design multi-pillar programmes with measurable gates; institutional pathways (including health systems) with honest language on working relationships.
Corridors empower African excellence abroad — distribution and RTM that multiply Feed and Empower.
Global hunger remains ~645M (SOFI 2026). Trade corridors and ethical RTM shape whether African production and fortification reach markets with dignity.
Priority Africa + Europe distribution strategy with Group standards and SupplierAdvisor®-ready trade.
Signature pathways already under way
Examples of how challenge language becomes programme design — always with honest scale labels.
Foods · NSNP pathway
Institutional 5kg packs on the NSNP pathway with DBE. Plan scale ~2.5 million children/day as delivery ramps — not current daily headcount.
ExploreDirect · solar containers
4 solar mobile containers in operation; larger SANTACO-linked rollout planned. Feed · Educate · Empower at taxi ranks and rural communities.
ExploreConnect · SupplierAdvisor®
Verified trade OS for menus, products and offtake — plus SchoolAdvisor for kitchen food-safety compliance under NSNP.
ExploreHow we speak about this work
- SOFI and SDG numbers are external multi-agency context — never presented as Big Five KPIs.
- Programme scale (e.g. NSNP 2.5M children/day) is plan language unless a dated brief restates operational headcount.
- Cost and nutrition-design figures are management / internal analyses — NDA for SKU-level detail.
- We prefer product + rails + OS over charity one-offs — dignity with commercial discipline.
